8U Program

Laying the Foundation

At 8U, the goal is simple: make baseball fun while establishing correct mechanics. Every drill and practice plan at this level prioritizes repetition, encouragement, and fundamental movement patterns.

✓ Throwing mechanics & arm care
✓ Tee work & soft-toss hitting
✓ Catching fly balls & grounders
✓ Baserunning basics
✓ Positional introductions

8U Season Plan Overview — 12-Week Program

Introductions, team rules, and starting from scratch. Focus: how to hold a glove, throw with a grip, and stand in the batter's box. No pressure — keep it light and get reps in.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-01, PP-8U-02 (2 sessions)

Step-by-step throwing progression: stance, grip, arm path, and follow-through. Catching: two-hand catches, body positioning, and tracking fly balls.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-03, PP-8U-04 (2 sessions)

Stance, load, stride, and swing. Use the tee exclusively to build muscle memory. Introduce stations: tee, soft toss with a net, and live observation.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-05, PP-8U-06 (2 sessions)

Rotate players through positions. Infield: ready position, fielding grounders, throwing to first. Outfield: drop step, tracking, and hitting the cutoff.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-07, PP-8U-08 (2 sessions)

Running through first base, rounding bases, tagging up on fly balls, and reading the coach. Introduce simple force-out situations.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-09, PP-8U-10 (2 sessions)

Put it all together. Run a full intrasquad scrimmage each session with coaching moments built in. Celebrate growth, reinforce what's been learned.

Practice Plans Included: PP-8U-11, PP-8U-12 (2 sessions)

8U Practice Plan Library

20 complete plans — 10 outdoor, 10 indoor. Every outdoor plan runs a full 2 hours and every indoor plan runs 90 minutes, with full prep, minute-by-minute timing, station groupings, coaching points, and common-mistake fixes.

8U Exit Benchmarks — “Ready for 9U” · what every plan builds toward
B1
Catch confidently
Catches a chest-high soft throw from 20 ft with glove, not body, 7 of 10 times — without turning the head away
B2
Throw with a step
Points front shoulder, steps toward target, throws overhand with elbow above shoulder; accurate to a partner at 40 ft
B3
Field routine batted balls
Fields a routine ball hit directly at them off the bat — infield grounder in the alligator position out front, AND a routine batted ball in the outfield — securing with two hands and making the throw
B4
Swing with balance
Athletic stance, controlled load and stride, level swing, holds a balanced finish; consistent hard contact off a tee
B5
Hit off the machine
Makes contact on 7 of 10 pitches from a pitching machine at age-appropriate speed
B6
Run the bases correctly
Runs *through* first, knows to turn left on an extra-base hit, touches every bag, runs on contact when told
B7
Know where to go
Can name their position, get to it, and knows "if the ball comes to me, throw it to first"
B8
Play at game tempo
Completes a machine-pitch scrimmage knowing their position, running on contact, and following the base-running rules without a coach re-positioning them

9U Program

Bridging the Gap

9U sits at a pivotal transition — most leagues are shifting from coach-pitch to player-pitch. This program bridges both worlds, reinforcing fundamentals while introducing the live-arm experience for the first time.

✓Coach-pitch to player-pitch transition
✓Swing adjustments for live pitching
✓Introductory pitching mechanics
✓Cutoff and relay introductions
✓Force play and simple game situations

9U Season Plan Overview — 14-Week Program

Revisit the core skills from 8U and assess where each player stands. Throwing grip, catch mechanics, tee work, and first-day energy. Set team expectations and establish practice routines.

Practice Plans Included: PP-9U-01, PP-9U-02

Maximize coach-pitch reps while players are still comfortable. Work on tracking the ball, plate coverage, and making consistent contact at different locations. Introduce soft hands and staying back on the pitch.

Practice Plans Included: PP-9U-03, PP-9U-04, PP-9U-05

First exposure to kid pitchers. Hitting: staying relaxed, seeing the ball out of the hand, and not bailing. Pitching: wind-up mechanics, balance point, and throwing strikes under pressure.

Practice Plans Included: PP-9U-06, PP-9U-07, PP-9U-08

Cutoff routes from outfield to infield, force play coverage at every base, and simple bunt defense. Walk-throughs before live reps — get players thinking, not just reacting.

Practice Plans Included: PP-9U-09, PP-9U-10, PP-9U-11

Focus on mental readiness and game confidence. Batting practice under simulated pressure, defensive reps with game-speed rotations, and post-game film review concepts.

Practice Plans Included: PP-9U-12, PP-9U-13, PP-9U-14

20 complete plans — 10 outdoor, 10 indoor. Every outdoor plan runs a full 2 hours and every indoor plan runs 90 minutes, with full prep, minute-by-minute timing, station groupings, coaching points, and common-mistake fixes.

9U Exit Benchmarks — “Ready for 10U” · what every plan builds toward
B1
Catch at distance
Cleanly catches and returns a crow-hop throw from 60 ft, and tracks a distance ladder of overhead and side-angle catches without turning away from the ball
B2
Throw with mechanics
Delivers a crow-hop throw — feet moving, elbow above shoulder, front side firm — accurately to a chest-high target at 60 ft
B3
Field batted balls
Fields infield grounders out front with two hands and outfield fly balls off the bat, then completes the throw — including short hops and backhands, not just balls hit directly at them
B4
Repeatable swing
Is balanced and on time consistently, and knows the difference between a ball and a strike
B5
Hit live pitching
Makes consistent contact against both a pitching machine and a live-arm coach or player pitcher, not just off a tee or soft toss
B6
Run bases with leads
Takes a proper primary lead, reads a passed or dirt ball to advance, and executes a steal start and slide safely and on time
B7
Play team defense
Knows and executes their coverage responsibility without being told — where the force is, who covers second, who backs up — at both walk-through and live-game speed
B8
Pitch a simulated inning
Throws strikes from the rubber with basic mechanics — balance point, direction, follow-through — enough command to work a simulated inning against live hitters

Raising the Ceiling

11U players are comfortable with live pitching and ready to refine their mechanics. This is the year to sharpen individual skills, deepen baseball IQ, and start building team defensive concepts.

✓Swing plane and contact point refinement
✓Pitch selection and plate discipline
✓Outfield routes and communication
✓Bunt defense and first-and-third coverage
✓Pitching: off-speed intro and arm care

11U Season Plan Overview — 16-Week Program

Video evaluation of swing and throwing mechanics if possible. Set individual goals for the season with each player. Long-toss program starts at Week 1 and progresses weekly.

Practice Plans Included: PP-11U-01 through PP-11U-03

Tee, soft toss, and live BP with specific swing-plane focus. Introduce "launch angle" concepts in simple terms. Work on driving the ball to all fields with intent.

Practice Plans Included: PP-11U-04 through PP-11U-06

Walk-through and live defensive packages: bunt coverage, first-and-third, outfield relays. Emphasize communication — "I got it," cutoff calls, and base coverage assignments.

Practice Plans Included: PP-11U-07 through PP-11U-10

Command over velocity. Four-seam and two-seam fastball differentiation. Changeup grip introduction with the understanding that it's a long-term development, not a weapon yet.

Practice Plans Included: PP-11U-11 through PP-11U-13

Shorter, high-focus sessions. Address issues seen in games. End-of-year goal review with players — what improved, what to work on in the off-season.

Practice Plans Included: PP-11U-14 through PP-11U-16

🔒 Full 11U plans include arm care program, individual player goal sheets, and full PDF practice plans.

11U Exit Benchmarks — “Ready for 12U” · what every plan builds toward
B1
Catch at distance
Clean catch on a chest-high throw at 75 ft; above-head and to-the-side catches at 75 ft, 7 of 10. Glove out front, two hands.
B2
Throw with mechanics
Shuffles in and hits a chest-high target on a line at 75 ft, 7 of 10; elbow above shoulder, front side firm.
B3
Field batted balls
Fields a routine infield grounder and a routine outfield fly off the bat, 8 of 10, and completes the throw.
B4
Repeatable swing
Balanced and on time consistently against a live arm, not just a coach's toss; knows a ball from a strike.
B5
Two-strike approach and strike-zone awareness
Shortens up or chokes up with two strikes and protects the plate; aggressive on strikes, learning where the zone is.
B6
Hit live pitching
Makes contact on 6 of 10 strikes thrown by a live arm at this level — balls don't count against him.
B7
Run bases with leads
Takes a primary and secondary lead, steals on the pitcher's first move, reads a ball in the dirt, slides safely, and knows the delayed-steal concept.
B8
Play team defense
Knows his position's job, covers the correct bag on a force, hits the cutoff, backs up the play, and runs a cutoff/relay alignment.
B9
Prep step
Athletic ready position as the ball enters the hitting zone, 75% of pitches while in the field.
B10
Strike rate (whole team)
Throws strikes on 55% of pitches from the rubber with repeatable mechanics; knows the arm-care routine.
B11
Beginning to control the running game
Starting to vary holds, looks, and tempo from the mound so a runner can't time him; coach-graded, no ratio.
